Where Did Jumping Stilts Come From?

Jumping stilts were originally designed, manufactured and patented in Germany by an aerospace engineer named Alexander Boeck (European Patent EP 1 196 220 B1 on July 02, 2003, US Patent No. 6,719,671 B1 on April 13, 2004, both with a priority date of July 20, 1999). Mr. Boeck's still manufactures his own brand of stilts, known as Powerskips.

Powerskips are very high quality and very expensive units typically worn by experts, professional performers or enthusiasts who need to jump over basketball hoops every day.

Mr. Boeck has two primary manufacturers who make and distribute his patent. One is located is Korea which manufacturers the brand known as Powerisers. The other is located in Hong Kong which manufactures and distributes 95% of the jumping stilts sold around the globe.

This Asian company sells jumping stilts around the world under several different brand names: Air-Trekkers, Flying Jumpers, Fly Jumpers, Pro-Jumps and Powerizers (recently changed name to PowerStriders). This manufacturer became 'famous' when they were chosen to supply the 2008 Olympic Games with jumping stilts for an incredible closing ceremony performance.

Mr. Boeck has a couple of other small, specialized manufacturers that make high end jumping stilts also. 7 League Boots are made and distributed in Europe and Velocity Stilts are very expensive, hand made stilts made in Nevada.

We should make note of another manufacturer who is breaking the rules. (There's always a cheater.) The brand name is called Skyrunner. This obscure manufacturer does not reimburse royalties to Alexander Bock and is illegal in patent-protected countries like the USA. Many ill informed businessmen have tried to import these units only to have customs block the shipment or receive dire warnings from the German patent holders. Buyer beware!

The activity of using jumping stilts in Europe, where jumping stilts were first distributed and have remarkable market penetration, is called "Powerbocking" to immortalize the patent holder's claim to the sport. In America the term Air-Trekking seems to be the catchy phrase most used. Who knows what the X-Games will call it in a few years.
